Great Snakes! More TinTin Covers

Just when I thought I had a handle on faux Tintin covers …

They keep turning up.  Fans still love Tintin pastiches and continue to grind out covers for nonexistent books with tantalizing titles that never were.  I have slowly accumulated a few more Tintin covers to put together another Tintin blog entry, only to find that there is a fellow on the web that has the most amazing accumulation of Tintin tribute covers as well as a number of political/satire covers all in one spot.

I actually haven’t been aggressively pursuing more Tintin covers, but when an interesting one turned up, I tossed into a pile for an additional entry.  In this blog post, I have scattered about a few “new” covers that I turned up earlier, rather than plug them in to the categories I had previously established in older blog entries.  But I have hit the mother lode.

Dave Ahl (SwapMeetDave) contacted me recently to let me know he had a huge trove of Tintin covers the like of which I have never seen.  He was right!  Let me caution you, SwapMeetDave’s collection of ersatz and unauthorized Tintin covers number in the hundreds, so expect to be overwhelmed.

I have to take my hat off to this diligent collector of Tintin covers as Dave Ahl has surpassed my expectation of just how many covers might be out there.  I invite you all to go to his website to view his amazing collection – just use the links provided below.             CoastConFan

Previous CoastConFan blog posts on Tintin covers that I have made over the years:

OK, this last cover is a cheat as it’s not Herge or Tintin inspired but a Lovecraft and Dr Seuss inspired mashup – so I cheat at lists, so what.

  1. Ah, yes. Tin Tin. The author is an answer to the standard questions 'Name five famous Belgians'. Now you just need four more. Hercule Poirot doesn't count.

    Dr Seuss and Cthulhu? Perfect.

Thank you so much for popping over to my steampunk blog. I wonder if Propnomicon would be interested? He is the go-to place for vampire killing kits, after all.

  2. 1. Eddy Merckx, five times winner of the Tour de France
    2. Adolphe Sax, who invented the saxophone
    3. Georges Remi (Herge) creator of Tintin and other comics
    4. Audrey Hepburn, actress
5 Plastic Bertrand, punk rock singer of ‘Ca Plane Pour Moi’
    6. Peter Paul Rubens, painter
    7. Renee Magritte, surrealist painter
    8. George Lemaitre, astronomer and originator of the Big Bang Theory (No, not the American TV show)
    9. Albert Claude, first biochemist to isolate a cancer cell
    10. Leo Hendrik Baekeland, who invented Bakelite.

Alas, I cheated because I could only name two: Georges Remi and Rubens (yes I had named Hercule Poirot and might have sneaked in Tintin too, if you hadn’t caught me). I was very pleased with list which I had to Google. I didn’t know who invented the saxophone and Bakelite, so now I know. I might have mentioned that I cheat at lists.

Not mentioned are the inventors of the Belgian Waffle and the inventor of the (so called) French Fry, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_fries .

A much bigger list is here: http://www.famousbelgians.net/alphabetical.htm with a number of Flemish masters who I might have named had I been thinking properly.

  3. Dammit! I always forget about Plastic Bertrand. And Audrey Hepburn? Really? Like...really? Wow! She clearly was never allowed near the fries or the waffles.

On the world stage, there only two names there that are globally known. One is a woman famous for being elegant and slender and the other painted fat women. I really like Rubens and I feel entirely justified in saying that.

Thank you for revealing to me that there is actually a site called Famous Belgians. I don't know the origin of the 'Name five' meme but I'm inclined to blame the French with starting it.

  4. Soccer blue! Are you suggesting a French Complaint? Actually I had pretty much forgotten that the Flemish are part of the Kingdom of Belgium myself. It's especially bad given my interest in history and in art. Rubenesque or Odalesque -- decisions, decisions.
